Abstract During the last two decades, wireless communication usage has intensified and expanded. Worldwide mobile data traffic has doubled over the past year and is expected to continue to grow at a similar rate as new applications emerge and smart-phone sales continue to increase. This increasing demand is outstripping the capacity of fundamentally vulnerable and unpredictable wireless networks. Wireless networks are composed of distributed nodes, which are limited in both spectrum and power, and connected by fluctuating wireless channels. They are rendered even more unreliable by natural disasters and terrorist attacks.

   Due to the growth of wireless communication application and its importance, and to accommodate the rising demand for ubiquitous high-speed data, today’s researchers will need to study the issues in sustainable wireless communication networks designed to function in presence of all kinds of challenges raised by the nature of wireless communication.

  In this talk, fundamental wireless communication issues, such as mobility, routing and energy efficiency, will be discussed; different wireless communication applications, from mobile ad hoc network and sensor network, to vehicular network and delay tolerant network, will be studied; existing solutions to the theoretical and technical difficulties of wireless communication will be presented; and future research directions will be proposed.
